EMERITUS ASSEMBLY, CSC-AAUP

                   MINUTES OF 2012 MEETINGS
                        AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS
                                                         Emeritus Assembly
                                                     Connecticut Conference

                                                      Minutes, October 9, 2012

Eighteen members and guests of the Emeritus Assembly met at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9,
2012 at the Arch Street Tavern in Hartford for lunch.  During lunch, President Eli Dabora called to
order a short business meeting.

Secretary Jane Knox distributed minutes of the May 17, 2012 meeting; a motion to approve the
minutes was made and seconded, and the minutes were unanimously approved.

Treasurer Richard Wurst distributed three reports for 5/31/12, 6/30/12 and 9/30/12.  The second of
these reports indicates that the statement saving account has been closed and the balance transferred
to the checking account, which is now the only active account of the Emeritus Assembly.  A motion
to approve the three Treasurer’s Reports was made, seconded, and unanimously accepted.

Eli Dabora proposed that a donation of $100.00 be made to the Haitian Health Foundation in
Norwich, CT in memory of Nicholas Welchman who passed away in June.  Nick served as both the
vice president of the Emeritus Assembly and then as the president before Tim Killeen.

Based on a suggestion by Dick Wurst, the executive board of the Emeritus Assembly will meet at
some point in the future to determine guidelines for memorial contributions upon the passing of
members of the group.

Morton Tenzer brought up the perennial problem of enlisting new members of the Emeritus
Assembly.  The problem seems to be that of obtaining lists of newly retired faculty and staff at
member institutions.

The business meeting was adjourned, and the group continued with lunch and coffee until about 1:00
p.m. before leaving for the Connecticut Science Center down the street.  Hank Gruner, Vice
President for Programs at the Center met the group at the entrance to the museum at 1:30 p.m. and
led a tour through the extensive exhibits on the fifth, fourth, and third floors.  Members of the EA had
a chance to try out the interactive exhibits and to learn more about the educational mission of the
Science Center.  At the completion of the tour at about 3:00 p.m., members were given the option of
continuing to explore the Center.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Knox, Secretary                                                                          Approved 11/14/2012
Webnote:  As mentioned in the above minutes, the group met at the Ballard Institute and
Museum of Puppetry in Storrs on April 17, 2012  but no minutes were taken at that
meeting.

                                                   Minutes, November 14, 2012

Twenty-three members and guests of the Emeritus Assembly met at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
November 14, 2012 in Room 106 Oak Hall on the UConn campus for a presentation by Ronald
Schurin of the Political Science Department at the University of Connecticut entitled “The Recent
Presidential Election: How Did it Come to This?  What Comes Next?â€

After an interesting and enjoyable talk by Professor Schurin, President Eli Dabora called a meeting
of the Emeritus Assembly to order at about noon.  Secretary Jane Knox distributed minutes of the
October 9, 2012 meeting; a motion to approve the minutes was made and seconded, and the
minutes were unanimously approved.

Treasurer Richard Wurst distributed the Treasurer’s Report of 10/31/12.  He pointed out that
the current balance differed slightly from the October 31 balance because $100.00 in memory of
Nicholas Welchman had been sent to and acknowledged by the Haitian Health Foundation of
Norwich, CT.  In addition, a check from the state AAUP Conference was received for newsletter
expenses, for which Timothy Killeen will be reimbursed.  A motion to approve the Treasurer’s
Report was made, seconded, and unanimously accepted.

The perennial problem of enlisting new members for the Emeritus Assembly came up once again.
Jane Knox suggested creating a “cheat sheet to give to all members with specific information
to give out to retired acquaintances and colleagues.  Carol Lewis suggested that such a sheet be
given to Human Resources on the various campuses to be given to faculty as they meet to plan their
retirement.  No action was taken on the suggestions.

President Dabora announced that there would be a planning meeting some time in January to plan for
spring meetings.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m., and the group met for lunch at the Blue Oak Café in
the Nathan Hale Inn, a short walk from Oak Hall.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Knox, Secretary                                                                      Approved 4/30/2013
